Knitting,  Reading,  Socks,  Yarn Along

Yarn Along | 4 Mar 2020

The Yarn Along began in early Fall 2010 as a weekly way to share knitting projects and good reads; motivating ourselves, and inspiring each other.  After a hiatus during 2017, it returned in January 2018 as a monthly link up.

The day I posted my March reading plans I also finished The Dutch House. This was a book I’d requested on Libby months ago and it was worth the wait. I’m still digesting it all – the choices of women so different from the choices I would have made. All in all, I think it was a good book but it left me feeling uncomfortable with the world, motherhood and family relationships in a way that is challenging and eye-opening.

I’ve since returned to what I was reading when my hold came for The Dutch House and it is a good, albeit slower and not as exciting book. If you follow me on Instagram or know me in real life, you also know I’m a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This year, our President General introduced the DAR Book Club. History and books together? Yes, please.

Catherine Kerrison has really done a wonderful job telling this complicated and emotionally charged story. The contrasts between Martha and Maria Jefferson and Harriet Hemmings, as well as Sally Hemmings and other Jefferson slaves, is interesting, especially given the research Kerrison has done with accounts from Sally Hemmings children and grandchildren. Jefferson’s Daughters is a nice change of pace from Fiction and extremely well done. I’m really enjoying it.

Surprise! I’m knitting socks. I am trying to not buy sock yarn and knit down my stash. This yarn has been hanging around for way too long. I’d originally gotten it as a Christmas gift for Addison but the yarn just didn’t seem to match his personality. Now it’s destined for some cozy vanilla socks for myself or Greyson, I haven’t quite made up my mind.

I’m not using any particular pattern. My socks (the plain old vanilla variety) have become a mish-mash of different features of socks that I’ve liked.

Yarn: Woolfiendd in Nymeria (colorway doesn’t seem to be available)
Needles: Size 1 Addi Turbos (I think that’s the brand)
